Learn to knit stockinette stitches:

Knitting stockinette stitches is probably the most commonly used knitting technique and something you are going to spend a lot of time knitting.

In this video tutorial we show you how to knit stockinette stitches. We work it with the yarn in our left hand behind the work, which is also called continental knitting.

Before knitting a stockinette stitch, first cast on stitches. We have also made a video, where you can see how to cast on. After casting on, you start knitting in stockinette stitches. You take the needle with the stitches in the left hand, holding the yarn over the left index finger and holding on to the yarn with the other fingers. Then you take the other needle in your right hand. The right needle is empty at first and you will gradually move stitches from your left needle to your right as you knit them.

With the right needle, pass it through the stitch from left to right, string the yarn over the right needle (from the front), pull the yarn through the stitch, and place the stitch on the right needle. You have now knitted your first stockinette stitch.

TIP: It is the right needle that determines your size. So, for example, if you knit in the round (e.g. a sweater), it can be an advantage (if you have interchangeable circular needles), to replace the left needle with a needle 1 og 2 sizes smaller. That way, the stitches slide more easily. NOTE! This is ONLY when you knit in the round and NOT back and forth or magic loop.
